Mulch calculator / Plan spreading time

Mulch Spreading Time Calculator

Use a job you actually timed to plan the next one. No default crew speed, no invented finish time.

Choose one unit for both the timed job and the next job. Convert a source quantity first if it uses a different unit.

A job your crew timed

Use only the time spent moving and spreading mulch. Keep travel, preparation and cleanup out of this reference.

Observed crew rate: —

The next job

Bring a measured quantity from the mulch calculator. Do not substitute a photo or a supplier's vehicle size for measured volume.

Your work window

Enter a previous job and the volume you plan to spread.

Spread time—clock hours
Total time—clock hours
Work window—Add available hours to check

Estimate assumes the same crew, equipment and similar site access as the timed job.

Refine total time

Add your own preparation, cleanup and available hours.

Empty preparation or cleanup fields count as zero. An empty work window means no fit claim.

A previous measured mulch volume divided by recorded spreading hours gives that crew's observed pace; a new volume divided by that pace gives projected spreading hours, with preparation and cleanup added afterward
The chain uses your own observations. It is not a productivity benchmark or a guarantee of finish time.

How this estimate works

Observed crew rate = previous volume ÷ previous spreading clock hours. Projected spreading hours = new volume ÷ observed crew rate. Both job volumes must use the unit you select above. Enter preparation and cleanup hours separately; they add to elapsed time but do not change the observed spreading rate. If you enter available hours, the worksheet compares them with the projected total.

For an arithmetic check in cubic yards, a crew that recorded 4 yd³ in 3 spreading hours has an observed pace of 4 ÷ 3 yd³ per hour. A 6 yd³ job at that same observed pace projects 4.5 spreading hours. With cubic meters selected, use cubic meters for both job volumes instead. These are illustrative entries, not a normal rate. A changed crew, longer barrow route, denser planting or different preparation scope makes the comparison weaker; record a more comparable trial instead of treating this as a promise.

Need to price the work after you decide the hours? The installation cost calculator accepts your time and local labor rate. The two pages do not transfer entries automatically. This page estimates time only; it does not set a price, lifting limit or safe work schedule.

Spreading-time questions

How long will my crew take to spread the mulch?

Enter the volume and spreading hours from a comparable completed job, then the volume of your next job. The calculator derives your observed crew rate and projects spreading hours. Add your own preparation and cleanup time separately.

Do both jobs need the same volume unit?

Yes. Select cubic yards or cubic meters once and enter both job volumes in that unit. If your source quantities use different units, convert one before entering it; the calculator does not silently convert volume units.

Can this calculator give me an average mulch spreading rate?

No. Travel distance, access, equipment, bed layout and crew experience can change the pace. This tool does not invent a standard rate; time a comparable job or a small trial before using its schedule.

Does a larger crew always finish proportionally faster?

No. This estimate assumes the same crew and similar conditions as your reference job. If the crew, equipment or route changes, enter a new observation instead of multiplying the old rate by headcount.
