Use the product's coverage
Sod varieties and supplier packaging can cover different areas. Enter the coverage printed on the quote or product label for the material you are actually buying.
Measure the lawn, match the quote
See the same lawn three ways. Enter a measured area and the coverage printed on your supplier quote, then compare whole rolls, pallets and square-foot pricing without hidden product assumptions.
Planned area = measured area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) · whole rolls = planned area ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up
Transparent area math
Measure the lawn as a rectangle or enter a known area. Choose US customary or metric units, then copy the roll coverage and pallet contents from the supplier quote. The calculator applies the allowance you choose, rounds rolls and pallets up to whole purchase units, and keeps supplier minimums, delivery or pickup, and prices visible instead of guessing them.

Rolls, pallets and a square-foot quote can describe the same lawn in different ways. The comparison keeps the coverage basis and delivery fee visible for an auditable decision.
A sod installation cost calculator needs local labor and preparation facts. This page calculates material and user-entered delivery costs; it does not invent labor rates.
From measured area to purchase
Example inputs, not a supplier quote: a 30 × 20 ft lawn measures 600 sq ft. Choosing a 10% allowance gives 660 sq ft to plan for; 10% is an example, not a recommendation. With coverage of 8 sq ft per roll, 660 ÷ 8 = 82.5, so the roll route needs 83 whole rolls.
If a pallet holds 50 rolls, 83 ÷ 50 rounds up to 2 pallets. That is 100 rolls covering 800 sq ft, or 140 sq ft more than the planned area. This difference comes from whole-pallet packaging; the calculator does not increase the measured lawn area.
For illustrative prices of $5 per roll, $200 per pallet and $0.50 per sq ft, plus $40 delivery, the three totals are $455 by roll, $440 by pallet and $370 by square foot. No minimum order is set in this example. Use the paths your supplier actually sells and replace every sample price with your own quote.
Common questions
Measure separate lawn sections and add their areas. Exclude paths, beds and other areas that will not receive sod before entering the total in Known area. This calculator does not subtract those areas for you.
Use the coverage stated by your current supplier for the product you are buying. Enter that positive area in Coverage per roll; this calculator has no fixed roll-size default.
Planned area equals measured area plus your chosen allowance. Divide it by coverage per roll and round up, then apply any minimum rolls. Divide that roll count by rolls per pallet and round up again, then apply any minimum pallets.
You buy whole pallets, not a fraction of a pallet. Multiply the displayed pallet count by rolls per pallet and coverage per roll to check purchased coverage; the difference from planned area is packaging surplus.
Minimum rolls can raise the roll count used by both the roll and pallet routes. Minimum pallets can then raise the pallet count. Minimum billed area changes only the square-foot quote, not the measured lawn area.
No. Totals use only the material prices and delivery or pickup fee you enter. Labor, preparation and installation require a separate quote. A blank price is unknown, not a free material offer.
Yes. Metric mode accepts metres and square metres, then converts the area to square feet. Minimum billed area and Price per square foot still use square feet, and all price inputs are in USD.
