Soil for raised beds

Raised Bed Soil Calculator

Inside area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet. Add raised garden beds with separate depths; compare bags and bulk.

01 Define the fill

Use inside measurements. Pick a starting case, then edit every value for your bed.

02 Measure each bed

Length and width are in feet; depth is in inches.

03 Match how you will buy it

Enter the bag size and supplier bulk increment from the product or quote you actually have.

Transparent volume math

How the raised bed soil calculator works

Each row turns a shape and finished depth into a volume. Rectangle rows use length × width × depth; circle rows use π × radius² × depth. The calculator adds the rows, applies the allowance you choose, then converts the result into bag and bulk buying quantities.

Measure the usable space

Measure inside the frame after liners, blocks or edging are in place. If a bed has more than one shape, split it into rows instead of guessing a single average.

Use the actual product label

Bag volumes, bulk increments and local delivery rules vary. Replace the starting values with the volume and quote from your supplier.

Read the comparison correctly

Bags are rounded to whole bags. Bulk is rounded up to the increment you enter. A price comparison appears only when you enter both quotes.

Worked geometry

Example: a 4 × 8 ft bed at 12 inches

A bed that is 4 ft wide, 8 ft long and 12 in deep holds 32 cubic feet before an allowance. With a 10% planning allowance, the order volume is 35.2 cubic feet, or about 1.30 cubic yards. At 1.5 cubic feet per bag, the purchase quantity rounds up to 24 bags.

That example uses geometry and editable purchasing inputs. Your inside dimensions, finished depth and bag label determine your result.

Common questions

Raised bed soil calculator FAQ

How do I calculate soil for a raised bed?

Measure the inside length and width, choose the finished soil depth, and multiply area by depth. Results show cubic feet and cubic yards, or cubic meters with metric inputs. Bag size uses cubic feet or liters, and purchase quantities round up.

Should I measure the inside or outside of the bed?

Use the usable inside dimensions where soil will sit. Outside frame measurements can overstate the volume when boards or blocks take up space.

How many bags of soil do I need?

Divide the allowance-adjusted volume by the volume printed on one bag and round up to a whole bag. Confirm the bag volume on your product label.

Is bulk soil cheaper than bags?

It depends on local prices, delivery fees and minimum order rules. Enter your own quotes to compare the two purchase routes without assuming a universal price.
