Calculation rules

How the estimate is calculated

Volume equals surface area multiplied by depth. Total bags equal the combined cubic feet divided by the selected bag size, rounded up once. A single delivery fee is allocated to areas in proportion to their calculated volume.

The area × converted-depth method follows Iowa State University Extension's mulch quantity guide. The price steps below use only the rates and job details you enter.

A mulch installation estimate adds material cost from measured volume and the entered supplier rate, one entered delivery fee, and labor cost from the chosen area or time basis. Total remains unavailable until all required rates are entered.
The whole-bag count helps compare purchases; this calculator's material cost uses measured volume in your chosen quote unit.

Worked quantity example

A 10 × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep

A 10 ft × 10 ft rectangle covers 100 square feet. At 3 inches deep, its volume is 25 cubic feet, or about 0.926 cubic yards. With 2-cubic-foot bags, the calculator rounds 12.5 up to 13 bags. Material, delivery, and labor remain unpriced until you enter local rates.

Worked quantity example: a measured ten-by-ten-foot bed is 100 square feet; at an added three inches or one-quarter foot deep it needs 25 cubic feet, about 0.926 cubic yards, or 13 whole two-cubic-foot bags after rounding up from 12.5.
These are measured quantities, not a material price, delivery fee or labor quote.

Why is delivery blank?

Enter the delivery or pickup fee for this order. Use 0 if it is free; a blank field means the cost is unknown.

How is delivery divided among areas?

The calculator treats delivery as one order fee and assigns it in proportion to each area's mulch volume. The allocated amounts add back to the entered fee.

Can two areas use different depths or units?

Yes. Every area has its own shape, unit system, dimensions, and depth. Imperial and metric areas can appear in the same estimate.

Why are the price inputs blank by default?

Use your own supplier and labor rates. Prices depend on the material, job access, delivery distance and your crew.

What is mulch installation cost per square foot?

There is no single local rate. Enter your material, delivery and labor quotes, choose the area-rate unit, and the calculator shows the resulting cost per square foot or square metre alongside the total.

How do I quote a mulch job?

Add each bed's shape, dimensions and depth, choose the product or bag size, enter local material, delivery and labor rates, then review the per-area breakdown and use the optional target-margin helper to calculate a customer price from entered job costs. It excludes any costs you have not entered, overhead and taxes; confirm access, preparation and cleanup with the customer.

Can I set a minimum price for a small job?

Yes. In the customer estimate helper, enter your minimum customer price before tax. The helper uses the higher of this minimum and the price calculated from your target margin. Any margin shown uses only entered costs and does not include overhead or taxes.
