Fresh installation
Use the fresh-install preset as a starting point, then replace its coverage with the number for your bale. A new bed may need a different depth and coverage than a light top-dress.
Mulch calculator / Pine straw calculator
Measured beds to whole bales
Divide your bed area by coverage per bale, then round up. Enter rectangles, circles or a known area below; use supplier coverage at your chosen depth. Add your prices for an order-cost estimate.
Whole bales = total ft² × (1 + allowance % ÷ 100) ÷ ft² per bale, rounded up
A transparent estimate
Use the area that will actually receive straw. Rectangles use length × width; circles use π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Choose Known area if you have already measured net square feet, including any subtraction for a bare tree center.
The calculator combines those areas under one depth and coverage input. Need different bales or depths in different beds? Calculate those orders separately. Raw bales shows area ÷ coverage before allowance; Order bales applies your allowance and rounds up.
Use the fresh-install preset as a starting point, then replace its coverage with the number for your bale. A new bed may need a different depth and coverage than a light top-dress.
Choose the refresh preset when you are adding material over an existing layer. Rake and inspect the bed first, then use the actual product coverage.
Keep beds separate so you can check a front border, side strip and tree ring on site. The final order combines them into one bale count.
3 in · 30 ft² per bale
The calculator's fresh-install starting point. Replace it with the coverage on your supplier's label.
2 in · 50 ft² per bale
A lighter planning starting point over existing straw. Packing and target depth can change the result.
Custom input
Use the actual bale size, needle type, packing and depth. The whole-bale result is only as good as that coverage input.
Product listings show why the presets cannot stand in for a supplier quote: one longleaf bale listing states about 45 ft² for a new area and 50 ft² over existing straw at 2.5–3 in, while another supplier's square-bale guide states about 35–40 ft² at 2–3 in. Those are claims for those products, not a range guaranteed for yours. Enter the coverage for the bale and depth you will actually buy.
Worked measurement
A 25 ft × 4 ft border is 100 ft². A 6 ft diameter tree ring is about 28.27 ft² before accounting for any clear space around the trunk. Together they are about 128.27 ft².
With a supplier coverage of 30 ft² per bale and a 10% allowance, the planning area is about 141.10 ft². Divide by 30 and round up: 5 whole bales. The calculator keeps the two areas visible so you can check the measurements before buying.
Those five bales represent 150 ft² of coverage at the entered depth, leaving about 21.73 ft² beyond the measured area. That remainder includes the allowance and whole-bale rounding, not measured waste. If your own quote is $8 per bale plus a $20 delivery fee, the example order costs $60; these are hypothetical prices, not a supplier quote.
That example is geometry, not a universal coverage claim. If your bale covers 40 or 50 ft² at the target depth, enter that number and the order changes.
Common questions
Add the measured square feet of the areas you will cover, divide by the coverage of one bale, include any allowance you choose, and round up to whole bales. Use the coverage printed by your supplier.
Add each bed as its own row. Use rectangles for borders, circles for tree rings, or Known area when you already measured the square footage. The calculator totals the rows.
The calculator clears the bale result until you re-enter coverage for the new depth. Depth and coverage must describe the same product application; changing depth alone does not tell us how far a compressed bale will spread. Get the matching coverage from your supplier, or choose an editable planning preset to explore an example.
There is no universal coverage number. For planning, the fresh 3-inch preset starts at 30 ft² per bale and the 2-inch refresh preset starts at 50 ft² per bale. Replace the preset with your supplier's actual coverage, packing and target depth.
Before adding an allowance, 1,000 ft² is 34 whole bales at 30 ft² per bale or 20 whole bales at 50 ft² per bale. These are planning examples; use your supplier's coverage for the final order.
Yes. Choose Circle / tree ring and enter the outside diameter in feet. If the trunk area is intentionally clear, measure or calculate the mulched ring area and use Known area for the most direct result.
It can add a delivery or pickup fee that you enter. It does not look up a supplier price, enforce a regional minimum, or promise delivery availability.
