Mulch vs Pine Straw Cost Calculator

Wood mulch or pine straw for this bed? Measure once, then build two whole-unit carts from the labels and quotes you actually have.

Your two order totals

Pine straw bales cost 17.00 less for this order.

Wood mulch bags145.0030 whole bags · 0 cu ft above plan
Pine straw bales128.006 whole bales · 0 ft² of stated coverage above plan

Same measured area: 240 ft². Wood requires 60 cu ft at your chosen depth. Pine uses your supplier’s ft²-per-bale claim. Totals use the same currency and exclude unentered tax or labor.

At the entered pine fee, pine straw matches the wood total at about 20.83 per bale.

One measured bed

Bring measured area from the grid-area calculator if the bed is irregular.

Wood-mulch bag offer

Depth and printed bag volume determine the whole-bag cart.

Pine-straw bale offer

Use the supplier’s coverage for that exact bale and your intended application.

A single measured 240-square-foot bed branches into a 30-bag wood cart and a 6-bale pine straw cart; each adds its own supplier fee before comparing totals.
The area is shared, not the coverage method. Wood is sold by volume; pine straw is entered using the supplier’s area-per-bale statement.

What the result does — and does not — say

Wood volume is area × selected depth ÷ 12. Bags = round up volume ÷ printed bag size. Pine bales = round up area ÷ the stated square-foot coverage per bale. Each order total adds its own entered fee after whole-unit rounding. The break-even line solves for the pine bale price at the current bag-cart total.

These are purchase comparisons, not a claim that the two materials have identical performance or should be installed at the same depth. Check site suitability, delivery terms, tax basis and product instructions before ordering. An unknown fee is not zero; leave it blank until you receive a quote. The tool will then withhold the verdict.

Iowa State University Extension supports measuring area and calculating volume at an intended depth for bagged mulch. Pine-straw coverage is deliberately supplier-entered because bale packing and application differ. For single-route bale planning, use the pine straw calculator; for two wood-mulch purchase formats, use bulk vs bags.

Before you choose

Should I use the same depth for wood mulch and pine straw?

No. Enter the wood-mulch depth you intend to apply, then use the pine-straw supplier’s stated square-foot coverage for the exact bale and application. This tool compares purchase quotes for the same measured area, not equal depths or identical performance.

What if one supplier has not given me a delivery fee?

Leave that fee blank. The comparison will withhold a cost verdict until both quotes are complete. Enter 0 only when that supplier confirms no additional fee.
