Mulch calculator / Choose between two bag offers
Mulch Bag Choice Calculator
One measured project. Two bag labels. Compare what you would actually pay for whole bags.
At the shelf
Enter a positive planned volume and both bag sizes, plus a nonnegative shelf price for each bag.
Shelf prices only · before fees and tax · compare suitable products.
Offer A
Read the bag volume on the label and enter the shelf price in your currency.
Offer B
Use the same project volume. If the bag size differs, its whole-bag rounding may change the final cart.
What the comparison counts
Bring measured, allowance-adjusted cubic feet from the mulch calculator; do not add an allowance twice. For each offer, whole bags = planned cubic feet ÷ cubic feet per bag, rounded up. Shelf-cart total = whole bags × entered price per bag. The extra purchased volume is whole bags × bag size − planned volume. Unit price is entered bag price ÷ bag size, but it is the whole-bag cart total that answers what you would pay at the shelf.
Prices and bag sizes come from you, not a live store feed. The calculation does not include coupons, stock limits, tax, delivery, pickup or labor. It also cannot determine whether two products are equally suitable for your site. Check those conditions before choosing an offer. Comparing one bag offer with a bulk delivery quote instead? Use the bulk vs bags worksheet so supplier minimums and separate fees are counted.
Bag-choice questions
Can a cheaper price per cubic foot cost more for my project?
Yes. Each offer must be purchased in whole bags. Enter the same planned volume for both offers: this calculator rounds each bag count up, then multiplies by that offer’s entered price per bag. A lower per-cubic-foot price does not always produce a lower whole-bag shelf cart.
Can I compare two different types of mulch here?
The arithmetic compares bag volume and shelf price only. Compare products you have already decided are suitable for the same job; this tool does not judge material quality, safety, color, coverage claims or how long a product will last.
Does the total include delivery, pickup or tax?
No. The result is whole bags multiplied by your entered shelf price. Add delivery, pickup, tax and other quoted charges yourself before making a purchase decision. Use the same currency for both prices.
Buying a whole-group sale?
This two-offer worksheet prices individual bags. If your store requires complete sale groups, allows matching single bags alongside them, or limits the number of groups, use the mulch sale bundle calculator to check the least-cost complete cart and any extra bags.
