Mulch calculatorCompare two planned depths
One area · two plans · clear quantity difference
Use one measured bed area and enter two depths from your own plan. Compare the mulch volume, whole bags and optional bag cost side by side.
01 / MEASURE
Keep the area the same in both scenarios. Use local measurements and the bag label.
02 / COMPARE
Illustrative inputs
Bag counts round each plan up to whole bags. No extra allowance is added.
Difference · B minus A
+16.67 ft³ · +8 bags · +$40.00Only the values you enter are compared. The result does not choose a depth or assess material suitability.
03 / CHECK THE MATH
Both scenarios use the same measured area. Changing depth changes volume in direct proportion.
For square feet and inches: volume (ft³) = area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12. For square metres and centimetres: volume (m³) = area (m²) × depth (cm) ÷ 100.
For each plan, whole bags = round up (exact volume ÷ volume on the bag). The extra line is the volume added solely by buying complete bags.
Enter one bag price to calculate each plan's bag cost. The difference is Scenario B minus Scenario A. It does not include tax, delivery or supplier minimums.
For 200 ft², 2 in needs 200 × 2 ÷ 12 = 33.33 ft³, or 17 bags at 2 ft³ each. At 3 in, the same area needs 50 ft³, or 25 bags. At the illustrative $5 per bag, the difference is 8 bags and $40. These values demonstrate the calculation; they do not suggest either depth.
Unit conversions use the exact relationship 1 inch = 25.4 mm and 1 foot = 0.3048 m. See the NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B. The calculator converts values for arithmetic; it does not verify a product label or supplier quote.
04 / QUESTIONS
Enter one measured area and two depths from your own plan. The calculator compares the exact mulch volume, whole-bag count and optional bag cost for each scenario.
No. Enter two depths selected for your project. The calculator does not assess plants, mulch type, soil, slope or site conditions.
Yes. Each scenario is rounded up to complete bags using the bag volume you enter. The result also shows the extra volume caused by package rounding.
No. The estimate uses the measured area and entered depths. It does not add waste, settling, minimum orders, delivery, tax or any other allowance.
