Mulch calculator Volume to average depth

Mulch Depth from Volume Calculator
Already have a delivery or leftover mulch? Enter its volume and the area you measured to estimate the average layer thickness.
Work backward from mulch already on hand
Most material estimates start with an area and a planned depth, then solve for volume. This calculator reverses that relationship for a different moment in the job: the mulch has arrived, the beds are measured, and you want to know the average layer the available amount can make.
Depth (centimetres) = volume (cubic metres) × 100 ÷ area (square metres)
Example: 0.75 cubic yard equals 20.25 cubic feet. Spread evenly across 108 square feet, that volume works out to 20.25 × 12 ÷ 108 = 2.25 inches. Your result changes if either measurement changes.
Iowa State University Extension describes the forward calculation as bed area multiplied by mulch depth in feet to get volume. Dividing the same relationship by area gives the average depth from volume on hand. The page also converts your entered units before calculating. See Iowa State’s mulch quantity guide and NIST conversion factors.
What the average does not show
The result assumes the full entered volume is spread evenly across the full area. A real bed may have dips, mounds, roots, borders, or areas you do not plan to cover. This is a volume-to-area estimate, not a field measurement.
It does not account for spillage, settling, compression, moisture, delivery shortfalls, or leftover material. It does not decide the right depth for a particular plant, soil, slope, or product. Check your plan, plant guidance, and supplier information before spreading.
Mulch depth from volume questions
How do I calculate mulch depth from the volume I already have?
Convert your volume and area to matching units, then divide volume by area. In US units, depth in inches = cubic feet × 12 ÷ square feet. The result is an average for the entered area.
Can I add several beds together?
Yes. Measure each area, convert them to the same area unit, and add them before entering the total. This assumes the mulch is spread evenly across that combined area.
Does this result tell me the right depth for my plants?
No. It only divides the entered volume by the entered area. It does not recommend a depth or check plant, material, soil, slope, or site conditions.
Does the estimate include settling, loss, or uneven ground?
No. It is a geometric average using the values you enter. It does not add spreading loss, settling, compaction, low spots, spilled material, or an order allowance.
