Mulch Volume to Area Calculator
Enter the total bulk volume and the layer depth in your plan. See the theoretical area it covers, then compare it with a bed you measured.

Reverse the area-and-depth volume relationship
Mulch estimates usually begin with measured area and selected depth, then calculate the volume required. This tool starts from the other end: you already know how much material is available and want to estimate the footprint at a depth you specify.
Square metres covered = volume (m³) ÷ depth (m)
Volume required = measured area × selected depth
Worked example: 1.5 cu yd × 27 = 40.5 cu ft. At 2.5 in, 40.5 × 12 ÷ 2.5 = 194.4 sq ft (about 18.06 m²). For 180 sq ft at that same depth, the calculation uses 180 × 2.5 ÷ 12 = 37.5 cu ft, or about 1.39 cu yd. The difference is 3 cu ft, equivalent to 14.4 sq ft at 2.5 in.
The Iowa State University Extension mulch guide explains area × depth for volume and the 27-cu-ft conversion to cubic yards. This page rearranges that geometry for known volume; the example depth is not a recommendation. Unit conversions use factors and derived-unit relationships described in the NIST Guide to the SI. What this coverage number leaves out
The result assumes all entered material is available and spread evenly in a uniform layer. Real beds can have edges, dips, roots, gaps, or areas that remain uncovered. The comparison is arithmetic against the total area you enter; it does not check a drawing or inspect the site.
No waste, settling, compaction, moisture, spill, delivery shortfall, or extra allowance is added. The calculator does not decide the right depth for a plant, mulch type, soil, slope, or location. Check the exact product and supplier details before using the estimate to make a purchase or spreading decision.
Mulch volume and coverage questions
How do I calculate area from mulch volume and depth?
Convert the mulch volume to cubic feet and the planned depth to inches, then calculate square feet = cubic feet × 12 ÷ depth in inches. In metric units, square metres = cubic metres ÷ depth in metres. This is a theoretical geometric area.
How can I check whether my delivered amount covers a measured bed?
Enter the total measured project area in the optional comparison field. The calculator finds the volume needed at your selected depth and compares it with the volume you have entered. A positive difference means geometric surplus; a negative difference means a shortfall.
Does this result include waste, settling, or a delivery allowance?
No. It uses the full entered volume and a uniform layer at the depth you choose. It does not add waste, uneven ground, spillage, compaction, settling, a delivery shortfall, or extra material.
Can I enter litres, cubic metres, centimetres, or millimetres?
Yes. Volume inputs accept cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic metres, or litres. Depth accepts inches, centimetres, or millimetres. Area comparison accepts square feet, square yards, or square metres; outputs include square feet, square yards, and square metres.
Does this calculator choose a mulch depth for my plants?
No. Enter a depth from your own plan or product guidance. The calculator only converts the values you provide and does not assess plants, soil, mulch type, slope, or site conditions.
