Rubber mulch / Fabric cutting

Rubber Mulch Fabric Roll Calculator

Enough square footage does not mean the cuts will fit. Compare two directions before buying fabric for one flat rectangular area.

Measure the rectangle and roll

Area to cover
Read the roll label and instructions

Overlap comes from your product, not a preset. In feet, 6 inches = 0.5 ft. Choose inches if you want to enter all dimensions without converting fractions of a foot.

Changing the unit clears the figures, so old numbers cannot silently change meaning. Inputs are 0.001 to 10,000 in the chosen unit. Calculations stay in your browser.

Illustrative 25 by 8 foot rectangle covered across its width by seven 8-foot fabric strips with half-foot side overlap; a 40-foot roll yields five strips, so a second roll is needed
Worked example, not installation advice: 25 × 8 ft rectangle, 4 × 40 ft rolls, user-selected 0.5 ft overlap. Seven 8 ft cuts need two rolls. The layout is schematic.

Why area alone can leave you short

Where will the first long cut come from? Start with the actual roll length. A short remainder cannot become a full strip just because it has enough square footage.

For the worked example, strips running along the 25 ft length need three 25 ft cuts. Only one fits in each 40 ft roll, so that direction takes three rolls. Turn the layout: seven 8 ft cuts fit in two rolls, with five cuts from the first and two from the second.

The two-roll plan leaves 24 ft of uncut roll length in total and 0 ft of outer-edge width trim. It is the better of these two continuous-strip layouts, not a promise of the best arrangement using seams and scraps.

What the planner counts

How much ground does the next strip add? The first strip covers one full roll width. Each additional strip adds roll width minus the side overlap.

If span ≤ roll width: 1 strip
Otherwise: 1 + round up ((span − roll width) ÷ (roll width − overlap))
Cuts per roll = round down (roll length ÷ strip length)
Whole rolls = round up (strips ÷ cuts per roll)

Both orientations use the same side overlap. If neither strip length fits the roll, the tool stops with no continuous-strip plan. It does not insert an unapproved end joint. A zero overlap is accepted only as an arithmetic input; it is not an installation recommendation.

Choose the application before the quantity

Rubber Mulch Warehouse's customer guide, published February 21, 2023, discusses separator fabric, roll orientation and the extra material used by overlapping lanes. Its advice is a supplier's recommendation, not a requirement for every site.

SRW Pro Plus IV's product instructions give a 4 to 6 inch overlap for that product. Read the current instructions for the product you actually buy rather than treating this example as universal.

University of Minnesota Extension's evergreen guidance, reviewed in 2026, advises against fabric under organic shredded-wood mulch and distinguishes separator use under rock or shredded rubber. This tool does not assess plant health, drainage, playground fall protection or product suitability.

Fabric roll questions

Can I work out fabric rolls from the bed area alone?

Not reliably. You also need the roll dimensions, the side overlap and the length of each continuous strip. A roll can have enough total area but still leave a cut too short for the plan.

How much overlap should I enter?

Use the current instructions for the fabric you are buying. SRW's Pro Plus IV instructions specify 4 to 6 inches; that does not set the overlap for every product. Choose one measurement unit for all five inputs.

Can turning the fabric reduce the number of rolls?

Sometimes. Compare strips running along the bed length with strips running across its width. Each direction can change strip count, cuts per roll and remaining uncut length. The planner compares these two layouts, not every possible arrangement.

What if the bed is longer than the roll?

Try the other orientation. If neither direction permits a continuous strip, this planner returns no plan rather than inventing an end-join allowance. Check the product instructions or choose a different roll size.

Does this calculator recommend fabric beneath wood mulch?

No. It sizes fabric after you choose a suitable application and product. University of Minnesota Extension distinguishes organic wood mulch from separator uses under rock or shredded rubber. A quantity result is not an installation recommendation.
